Barack Obama's "Change": Tax, Surrender, and Freeze in Darkness

"We can not turn back", said Barack Obama during his acceptance speech for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. But that's exactly what he proposes to do: make a u-turn away from capitalism, economic growth, and individual responsibility and toward the 19th and 20th century failed policies of socialism and collectivism.

"I will cut taxes for 95% of all working families". That sounds pretty good until you ask for a definition of "working families". What is a working family, and at what level is the income cut-off, above which a family would get hit with a tax increase and not a tax cut? Is it $60,000? $75,000? $95,000? He won't say.

There isn't enough wealth among the relatively few "rich" in this country to pay for national health insurance and the other programs Obama proposes. Collectively, the middle class is where the real wealth is, which means a middle class tax hike, not a cut.

He won't admit to that, of course, and the Democrats will pass a series of stealth tax increases. They'll do it by allowing the alternative minimum tax to effect twenty million middle class taxpayers, by reinstating the "marriage penalty", and by raising the capital gains tax from the current 15% to 28%, and then telling us that only the rich will pay it.

You'll decide to sell your house, and you'll discover that they've lowered the capital gains exclusion from $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly, to $100,000. The house you bought in 1980 for $100,000 and can now sell for $300,000 will have a $100,000 taxable gain and you'll pay a $28,000 tax on it for the privilege of having Barack Obama in The White House and the Democrats in control of Congress. They consider it your obligation to the common good, as defined by them.

They'll tell you that it's inhumane and contrary to our country's noble principles to secure our borders and deport illegal aliens. Obama will claim that the only reasonable approach would be "comprehensive immigration reform", which will amount to amnesty for all illegal immigrants and their families. Of course, they'll be eligible for Obama-care, and you'll be required to stand in line behind them for your medical care while you pay for theirs.

"I will restore our moral standing in the world." That would be Barack Obama speaking, not Jimmy Carter, in case you've been asleep for the past twenty-eight years. Perhaps you remember, or maybe you've read about it. Jimmy Carter, the President who conducted a "moral" foreign policy while the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and slaughtered tens of thousands, and while the Iranians invaded the American embassy in Teheran and held America hostage for 444 days. (Obama may have missed that episode because it occurred at approximately the same time at which he admits to having been strung out on cocaine.)

Then there was Bill Clinton, who had Osama bin Laden in his sights but wouldn't take the shot because someone in the Department of Justice told him it would be illegal. The Europeans admired our restraint though.

A moral foreign policy would recognize that 3,000 dead Americans on the streets of Manhattan and at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania are not a good trade-off for the love of our "allies". Moral courage is not one of Barack Obama's strengths. He opposed the surge in Iraq for partisan political reasons and now refuses to admit that the surge has worked. He was wrong then and he's wrong now.

Obama promises to employ "aggressive diplomacy" to convince Iran to give up its nuclear weapons ambitions. Ask the hostages who were held captive in the American embassy in Teheran how effective Jimmy Carter's aggressive diplomacy was. It's just a slick Obama term for appeasement and it will lead to a larger conflagration in the future.

We're supposed to trust him with our energy future, yet he doesn't know the difference between a drill bit and a terabit. He wants to spend $150 billion over the next ten years to "break our dependence on foreign oil". He believes that the federal government, which is renowned for such massive successes as Amtrak, Social Security, Medicare, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is going to figure out which technologies will lead to effective alternative energy sources. There must be some spectacular scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs hiding out in the federal bureaucracy.

John McCain's running mate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, has actually managed complex energy issues. In August 2008, she signed a bill that she pushed to build a $40 billion pipeline to transmit natural gas from the North Slope to the lower 48 states. That's not a speech, Senator Obama. That's real experience and a successful track record.

"If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from." Uh, that would be you Senator Obama. Your record consists of snorting cocaine, voting "present" while you were an Illinois state senator, accepting a bribe from a now convicted felon, and running for President during the 3 1/2 years that you've been in the U.S. Senate. To obscure that "record" you try to paint John McCain, a legendary American hero, as someone Americans should fear.

Hubris is derived from lack of experience, ignorance of history, a failure to recognize or acknowledge one's limitations, or some combination of all three. Barack Obama doesn't have any experience. He has never been governor of a state, led a squadron in combat, run a company, met a payroll, or organized a profitable enterprise. His lack of knowledge regarding complex economic issues is evident, and his lack of moral courage in foreign affairs is dangerous.

The combination of his ideologically driven mind, his tendency toward appeasement, and his hubris would lead to catastrophic losses for the middle class and most of what they have achieved.
